In the fall of 1991, a group of Bucks County, Pennsylvania residents were made aware that 17 Navajo men had died in the alleys and drainage ditches of Gallup, New Mexico due to exposure that last winter because they had lacked the proper clothes and blankets to keep warm. The first ANA effort was a community-wide blanket drive. By December 1991 they had gathered 2 tons of blankets to be shipped to Gallup to be distributed to those who needed them most.
This was only the beginning. In the last decade ANA has greatly expanded its services to the Native Americans of the Four Corners region. Besides attempting to meet immediate needs, such as blankets, clothing and shelter, ANA has also initiated projects to assist Native Americans in helping themselves. Some of the programs ANA has been involved in are:|
